Security officers are this era’s unsung heroes. Security Professionals are integral in maintaining safe and secure workplaces, schools, shopping malls, and communities. They are hard-working, highly trained, deter crime, lead evacuations, provide information, work closely with local law enforcement and are vigilant in their efforts to keep us safe. They are our country’s first responders.
A security presence in many public spaces is expected and our daily interaction with security officers sometimes lets us take for granted the critical role of a security officer. Let’s take a closer look at the role.
Security professionals go through rigorous and extensive training and need to hold a range of skills that most professions don’t need to deal with. In one day they need to deal with the sensitivity of dealing with a lost child to the ability to respond to and effectively address criminal activity. Placing themselves at risk on a daily basis as they confront and detain criminals engaged in crime, trespassing and every other manner of unlawful behavior that occurs in public and private spaces. They initiate emergency response plans and assist in medical emergencies.
Training for security professionals needs to be aligned with the position’s specific duties, the industry, and the neighborhood. State-of-the-art training is integral to keeping the workforce ready and able to take on the day to day challenges. Security professionals are trained to work with technological security solutions including robots, cameras, and x-ray screening systems. Technologically advanced systems help screen everything from a ticket to a truck.
If a security officer is assigned to a certain industry they must be knowledgeable about the regulatory requirements in the industry where they provide services such as ports, universities, and hospitals to name a few.
The complexity of these requirements, combined with the need to be ever vigilant, yet customer service oriented, creates a challenging role. It’s safe to say that Security Guards are our Everyday Heroes and let’s not take them for granted and acknowledge their words and duties because they strive every day to help keep us safe and secure.
