Secure Guard Security Services H.O.T. Program – Security for the Homeless

Secure Guard Security Services has always dealt with homeless individuals and the problems associated with homelessness. And like any other security company, the tactics used were not very effective and often the results didn’t resolve the issue.

In September of 2017, the President of our company directed our operations team to design and implement a training program for our security officers to learn how to dealwith the homeless in such environments as retail properties, living communities, strip malls, and commercial properties. Research was conducted with local social service providers. Management knew that in order for us to beeffective in helping the homeless population, we had to know exactly what services were available and in addition, management needed to have a goodrapport with the service providers.

Some of the service providers here in Orange County include,O.C. Social Services, O.C. Rescue Mission, Goodwill, Salvation Army, MercyHouse and of course the local police department for each city we service. Therefore, the “H.O.T.” (Homeless Outreach Team) was created. These officersare an elite team of professionals, trained to handle challenging situations and well trained in communications and people skills.

Our training  curriculum includes the following

• Sensitivity Training
• General Safety Measures
• Personal Safety Measures
• Aggression and Violence Predicting Factors
• Verbal Measures to Diffuse and Avoid Violent Behavior 
• Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB)

Although, these tactics may sound aggressive, on the contrary, we utilize a soft approach in addressing the homeless and only deploy this training for safety assurance.  With this approach, we hope to accomplish our main goal which is safety for the community, and at the same time, help guide the homeless if possible.
